The Student visa is for people aged 16 or over who have been offered an eligible course by a licensed UK student sponsor. The application must be supported by a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies and must meet the financial, English-language and other route requirements.
The timing and evidence differ depending on whether the application is made from inside or outside the UK. Applicants should also check whether they need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate, tuberculosis test or parental consent.

After study
A Student visa has restrictions on work and self-employment. After successfully completing an eligible course, some graduates may qualify for the Graduate route or another work route. Planning should take place before the Student permission expires.
