The Standard Visitor route covers tourism, family visits, certain business activities, short study and other permitted purposes. A visitor can usually stay for up to six months, although different periods may apply to particular activities.
Depending on nationality, a person may need a Standard Visitor visa, an Electronic Travel Authorisation or neither before travel. Every visitor must still satisfy the eligibility and permitted-activity rules at the time of travel.

- An intention to leave the UK at the end of the visit
- Sufficient funds for the visit and return or onward journey
- Credible personal, financial and professional circumstances
- Accommodation and travel plans consistent with the proposed visit
- Any additional evidence required for business, study, medical or other activities
Activities and restrictions
Visitors may undertake only activities permitted by the rules. They must not normally work for a UK business, provide goods or services, run a business as a self-employed person, access public funds or make the UK their main home through frequent or successive visits.
