British Citizenship

British citizenship can be acquired through several legal routes, including naturalisation, registration and certain rights connected to birth, parentage or status. The correct route and evidence depend on the applicant’s personal history.

For many adults, naturalisation follows indefinite leave to remain or settled status. Applicants who are not married to a British citizen will usually need to have held permanent status for at least 12 months, while different timing can apply to spouses and civil partners of British citizens.

Common naturalisation requirements

• Indefinite leave to remain, settled status or another qualifying permanent status
• The required period of residence in the UK
• Physical presence in the UK at the start of the qualifying period
• Absences within the permitted limits, subject to possible discretion
• Knowledge of English and passing the Life in the UK Test, unless exempt
• Good character and compliance with immigration law
• An intention to continue living in the UK where that requirement applies
